The Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language for Foreigners (Celpe-Bras) is the international exam that certifies the levels of oral and written performance in Portuguese. With more than 20 years of history, the exam was created and implemented by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) and is, since 2009, under the responsibility of the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research (INEP). The exam is applied both in Brazil and in other countries, with the support of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).

It is the only certificate of proficiency in Portuguese as a foreign language officially recognized by the Brazilian government. Internationally, it is accepted in companies and educational institutions as proof of mastery of the Portuguese language. The Celpe-Bras is required by Brazilian universities to apply for scholarships and for admission to undergraduate courses and postgraduate courses. In addition, foreign professionals in general are required to validate their degrees with the aim of working or doing internships in Brazil.

The exam is divided into two modules (written test and oral test), which determine four levels of competence: intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced and upper advanced.

Currently, the exam is administered in 126 examination centers, 78 of which are distributed in more than 30 countries around the world, and thousands of students take it each year. In 2019, 11,266 people took it in the two editions carried out.
